Anyway, I'm not sure about who'll take up the spot for the New York dropouts, but I did come across a band whose sound catches me. To prepare yourself for the awesomeness to come, here is a four step recipe: Step One: Download Passion Pit - Sleepyhead right now. I called them a few weeks later and we got a practice space. Passion Pit will play After Hours at Northeastern on February 4 and yet another gig for The Pill at Great Scott on March 7. No, no, that's not it at all. Passion Pit was nominated last March in the 2008 Best Music Poll in Boston, and lo and behold, they won! The villagers, inundated with rodents, saw no end in sight. This track is a multifaceted hit remix in that it could be played in any situation, really, paying appropriate homage to the original track. Led by a tri-synth assault, the five man collective galloped through half an hour of ecstasy-injected electronic power pop. Shit is going to be ridiculous. So like, get it out of your mind that this is yet another avant-retro scumbag project, some kind of 21st-century revival of that 80's electropop revival from the late 90's. The set was originally a belated Valentine's Day present, which Angelakos put together for his girlfriend at Boston's Emerson College. Not exactly like Animal Collective's latest album, Strawberry Jam, but the same kind of hands-in-the-air feeling. In retaliation, the man returned one day while church services were being observed and led the town's one-hundred and thirty children into a cave where they disappeared, never to be seen or heard from again. In a little more than a year, Passion Pit has evolved from a one-man dorm room project into a burgeoning band that has surged above the buzz, capable of selling out three nights at New York's Terminal 5 January 2010 and a night at Prospect Park in Brooklyn. Euphoric but plaintive, sublime but wiggly, Chunk of Change gets to the truth of the matter about what we all want--love, release, goddamn snappy beats and swooningly gorgeous hooks.
Last nite i got to sit down with four of the five members and get better insight to what Passion Pit really is. On Manners, you can hear what someone like Angelakos does in a proper studio where he can get virtually any sound he wants. The pressure was unquestionably intense, especially for all shows leading up to -- and even a few months of those after -- the release of Manners which often stood-in for the luxury of a proper rehearsal time. The screaming vocals are kept unbroken, while also incorporating the reversed vocal sample found in the original track. Tulsa, led by clarion-voiced Baltimore transplant Carter Tanton, have gotten kudos everywhere from Rolling Stone oldie David Fricke to the snot-noses at Pitchfork. Tom Waits will never license his music to anyone, but in order for us to hit the audience we want to hit, it is a great way to do it.
Who knows the truth behind the tale of the Pied Piper? There exist many different versions of the story, but according to the infallible research of the minions working at Wikipedia, the legend originated with a terrible rat infestation in the town of Hamelin, Germany, in the year 1284. I didn't think people were asking why it is in a Palm Pixi ad, since who would want to be associated with that product or a corporation? Passion Pit is a two-fold entity sharing a single essence: there's in-the-studio Passion Pit, essentially comprised of Michael writing, designing, and constructing intricate cathedrals of sound, and Nathan Donmoyer handling live percussion and programming. A few months later, with the help of Hultquist, Angelakos was building a full ensemble capable of realizing and producing the sounds in his head and taking them to the stage. Nothing on Chunk Of Change was mastered, so we opened it up a bit in the mix and it was a great way of seeing the song in another light. So i released an album Chunk of Change the night before a show on April 20th 2007 and i played with my laptop and just sang along, and it went over pretty well.
But that's not all of it. Adam Lavinsky's percussive force was in full effect for the duration of Passion Pit's set, and it was his vivacity and energy that poured gasoline all over the emerging flame that the group's performance revealed. And that girl--what was her name--how gorgeous she looked in that weird white sweatshirt with all that fake sparkly stuff in her hair? Michael, who counts 70s folk among his many obsessions, is extremely hesitant to sample any music at all, preferring to use songs and sounds as cryptic reference points and textures rather than literal references. Passion Pit is a new band out of Boston that is about to blow up. The lead vocalist, clad in a beanie hat and red Gibson slung around his shoulder, put his heart and soul into some very passionately sung numbers the band played.
However, if you can't make it to the Boast tonight, have no fear. Passion Pit is meant to be performing tonight and Pulp and Circumstance nods their hat to this amazing Cambridge, Mass. When it came time to record an official debut album, Angelakos went to work with producer Chris Zane for Manners, the first full-length Passion Pit collection, essentially writing and playing all music on the album with the exception of programming and drumming by Nathan Donmoyer and Ian Hultquist's guitar work on select tracks. Not watching that French film pornographique called Passion Pit. The outcome was all they could have hoped for, but the villagers reneged on their agreement and refused to pay the piper. It's just dripping with buttery smooth dance beats and sweaty magic. The night began, however, with Cambridge, Massachusetts' own Passion Pit.
Angelakos has always carried his pop vision in his head and, now that's it's 2010, Passion Pit is bringing that vision to the world. The parents of New Haven should have heard of this tale.
